***DJ Play My Song Exclusive :: Interview with Mr. Southern Smoke himself, DJ Smallz!

Phylece: Where are you from originally?

DJ Smallz: I was born in Japan at a Navy base where my father was stationed at the time in the military. I moved to Florida when i was three and been here ever since, Tampa, as of late

Phylece: Do you still spend a lot of time there?

DJ Smallz:I've been going back once a year for a wk of show dates last 3 years

Phylece: How you got your start in the business? And was there a major
influence in your life that was instrumental to your success?

DJ Smallz: My head was really into school. I got a scholarship to college and everything. I was DJin' as a hobby ever since middle school and I was ready to get my club game poppin in high school. The first southern smoke CD was really a demo for me to get into clubs. It was the hottest southern music put together, mixed by me. People passed the CD around in high school and clubs, word of mouth spread and one thing led to another. That's how the southern smoke movement really began.

Phylece: What drives you to keep going in the industry?

DJ Smallz:To be the best at my postition, whether its marketing, djing, a&r-ing, etc.

Phylece: Everyone knows you as "Mr. Southern Smoke," tell us about you the
Southern Smoke mixtape series came about.

DJ Smallz: Like I said earlier, it all began as a demo CD to get me into the local club circuit. My first major host was on volume 6 with hip hop pioneer Uncle Luke of 2 Live Crew. Uncle Luke is a living legend and the reason why albums today carry the parental advisory sticker – he fought for his lyrics! It was crazy and exclusive – Uncle Luke had never hosted a mixtape before and I got him out to do it. I've got a lot of history with my hosts. T.I. and C-Murder hosted a Southern Smoke behind bars. When Pimp C (of UGK) got out of jail, I was the only CD he hosted. Master P never hosted anyone's either except for a Southern Smoke as well.

Phylece: What is your ultimate goal in the industry?

DJ Smallz: To be the best at what i do

Phylece: Where is your favorite place to DJ?

DJ Smallz: Anywhere overseas, i've been blessed to get booked to DJ in Canada, Austria, Germany, Japan and Switzerland so far

Phylece: What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a DJ?

DJ Smallz:My advice to DJs is to really keep breaking new music and new artists, it’s the only way hip hop music can survive.

Phylece: Out of all of the people you've had to work with who did you enjoy
working with the most?

DJ Smallz: Unlce Luke - he's a funny muthafucka!!!
